Constitution Celebration September 17, 2017

On Sunday, September 17, 2017, the Anniversary of the Signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, was commemorated at the Pine Hill Church of the Nazarene, 5175 White Oak Road, McEwen, TN, as DOARP Vice President Maurice Kellogg addressed the congregation.

Portraying Patriot George Buchanan, he spoke about   spending four full months at the State House in Philadelphia and how a wonderful document had been just put together and how he just had a long hard ride to deliver the news.  The document about which he spoke was the newly created Constitution of the United States of America.  No longer were they a disparate 13 colonies, but now they were officially becoming a Nation, the United States of America.  Of course, the Constitution was not ratified and signed until a Bill of Rights, the first ten Amendments to the Constitution, were formed.  These 10 Rights defined as part of the  Constitution the Rights that were deckared in the Declaration of Independence.  This began a new form of governing a Nation, a government of, by, and for the People.  The governing was from the People up, not from those elected down.  Those elected to office were to represent their constituents at home.  Now they had a voice that a king could not quell.  Much blood and sweat had been expended to make this government a reality.

George Washington Dinner February 18, 2017*

At noon, February 18, 2017, the Founding Fathers Charter Chapter, Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots (DOARP)  held their George Washington Dinner at Dale's Steak and Seafood located at the old Dickson County Country Club, 800 Hwy 70 West, Dickson, TN.

After a delicious meal prepared and served by Dale and his staff, George Washington’s Birthday was honored and celebrated as President Maury Miller gave A WORD ON GEORGE WASHINGTON ~ Difficult Times at Valley Forge.

Following the dinner the newly re-elected Officers were installed for the next two year term:  President - Maury Miller III, Vice President - Maurice Kellogg, Treasurer - Neil Ramsey, Registrar/Genealogist - Brett Lashlee.  The Secretary, Susan Miller, was absent from the dinner due to illness.

The DOARP George Washington Dinner is open to those interested in learning more about the Founders of the United States of America and the lives and activities of the Patriots.

The DOARP was formed to fill a void in American Patriotic societies of patriot descendants.  The purpose was not to bring honor and recognition to DOARP members themselves, but to promote, recognize, and encourage the efforts of young Americans as well as older Americans who are working to further the values and principles on which America’s Founding Fathers formed her.  The purpose is to promote service to others rather than to be served.

Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots is open to men and women and to their immediate families.  This family membership of a descendant society is to encourage and strengthen the bond of the family in America and to bring families together in learning about and remembering the patriots’ efforts and stamina in forming the great United States of America.

Constitution Celebration September 17, 2016*

On Saturday, September 17, 2016, the Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots (DOARP) sponsored the Ninth Annual Constitution Celebration commemorating the 229th Anniversary of the Signing of the United States Constitution by America’s Founders on September 17, 1787.  The Celebration took place at the Park Office Shelter in Montgomery Bell State Resort Park, in Burns, TN.  DOARP President Maury Miller welcomed attendees, and Pastor Randy Clark of Pegram Baptist Church delivered the Invocation.  Guest soloist Jeff Jeffrey led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and then sang The Star Spangled Banner.

DOARP President Maury Miller spoke on The Framing of the Constitution.  Our tradition of reading the Preamble to the United States Constitution followed, along with each of the first ten amendments, The Bill of Rights, read by ten individuals of We The People attending the Celebration.  DOARP Vice President Maurice Kellogg presented a comprehensive exegesis on How America’s Constitution Makes Her Different From Other Nations.

Featured songwriter, Kathy Humphrey, blessed us with her songs The Flag, a song written from a “tattered and torn, weathered and worn” flags perspective of the battles and events over which it had flown, and her song that first debuted at the 2010 Constitution Celebration, We Are All In This Together (The Constitution).  Soloist Jeff Jeffrey led those present in singing America the Beautiful and My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.

We were honored to have as our guest speaker Lt. Col. Courtney Rogers (Retired Air Force, TN Air National Guard), Tennessee State Representative, 45th District Parts of Sumner County.  Foundations Of Liberty, her topic, outlined the struggles, perseverance, insight, and vision that informed the framers of America’s constitution and moved them to create a  constitutional democratic republic.  Their decisions were the beginning of a form of government never before attempted in the history of the world.

Attendees at this year’s Celebration were given a GOD, Country, and You quiz.  It surprised some there to learn how many Biblical symbols, characters, and references to GOD are literally carved in stone in America’s legislative buildings and monuments.  America’s Founders knew that without a relationship with GOD Our Creator we would not be blessed by GOD as a Nation.  The highest score on the quiz was about 40%!  (We’ve all got some learning to do!)

Our Celebration closed with words from DOARP Treasurer Neil Ramsey, a stirring rendition of GOD Bless America sung by Jeff Jeffrey, and the benediction from Pastor Clark.

The sad thing about the 2016 Constitution Celebration was the downpour that came right about the time that the Celebration started.  It diminished the size of the crowd, but it did not dampen the patriotic spirit of those who were there to celebrate the most unique Constitution in the world still to this day.

Taking the time to remember and study the founding of America is important to sustaining the Liberty, Freedoms, and Rights declared and protected by our Founding Fathers in the words of our Constitution.  They were not easily won, and We The People must remain vigilant to ensure they continue.

The Constitution Celebration is an annual event of the DOARP and other American Patriot societies.

George Washington Dinner February 20, 2016*

At noon, February 20, 2016, the Founding Fathers Charter Chapter, Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots (DOARP)  held their George Washington Dinner at the Hummingbird Restaurant, 124 South Main Street in Dickson City.  The food was delicious and the atmosphere welcoming and delightful.

George Washington’s Birthday was honored and celebrated as President Maury Miller talked about “George Washington – With Humbleness He Set A Standard for the Nation.”

Treasurer and Military Representative Neil Ramsey presented the DOARP’s “Exemplary Citizen Award” to young Evan Dillard of Charlotte, TN.  Evan had been featured in a human interest story in the Dickson Herald for giving his birthday money and raising nearly $850.00 to purchase gifts of coloring books, cans of Playdough, all kinds of reading books, games and puzzles for children who are patients at Children’s Hospital of Vanderbilt University.  To begin a fund for his next project, Neil Ramsey donated a $50.00 starter ”seed.”  Evan’s parents and both sets of grandparents, plus his closest friend, also attended.

The DOARP recognizes that Evan did not donate his birthday money and raise even more money to purchase gifts for the hospitalized children to bring attention to himself but that he did it to bless the children and to show that someone cared and was thinking about them and praying for them.  It was purely a selfless act.  Selfless acts are the essence of “Exemplary Citizens.”

Grave Marking at Holland and Rumsey Cemetery October 10, 2015*

October 10, 2015, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, at the Holland and Rumsey Cemetery on Little Hurricane Creek Road just outside McEwen, TN, the Founding Fathers Charter Chapter, Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots (DOARP), along with family descendants of American Revolutionary War Patriot Captain Benjamin Holland, ceremonially remembered Captain Holland and marked his grave denoting his Patriot status.  Captain Holland was awarded 1,500 acres in what is now Humphreys County, TN, for services rendered in the American Revolutionary War.  Like others serving alongside Captain Holland, he fought and suffered in pursuit of Liberty, Justice, and Equality, contributing his portion to the victory against the Mother Country, Great Britain.  A miracle was accomplished when victory was declared.  The fighting Colonists, through the Grace of God, had managed to defeat the greatest military of the world at that time.

DOARP President Maury Miller welcomed those gathered on this beautiful autumn morning.  The Rev. Bobby Eddings, Pastor of Lighthouse Ministries opened and closed the service with the invocation and benediction.  Patriot Descendent Robert M. Holland Jr. lead the Pledge of Allegiance.  Humphreys County Executive Jessie Wallace spoke on the courage and convictions of the American Patriots and of their coming west to claim their land grants and carve out a life for themselves and their families in this wilderness.

Peggy Holland Mullinicks and brother, Gary Holland, patriot descendents, along with Brett Lashlee, DOARP Registrar, placed flowers at the grave and unveiled the granite marker honoring Captain Holland.

The highlight of the ceremony was the appearance of the resurrected spirit of Captain Benjamin Holland (Brett Lashlee).  Captain Holland told about his experiences in the militia and about his younger brother serving with George Washington at Valley Forge.  He told about the guerilla warfare campaign in North Carolina, a local “civil war” between the Loyalists and the Patriots.  British Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallace found himself caught in the middle of this local “civil war” when he invaded with his mighty army and was driven north by the Patriots after waging several battles and skirmishes.  After the war Captain Holland made his way to then Stewart County, which later broke off and became Humphreys County.  There he stayed, became a husband, father, and well-respected citizen of the community, farming the land granted to him until his death.

Constitution Celebration September 12, 2015*

On Saturday, September 12, 2015, the Descendants Of American Revolution Patriots (DOARP) sponsored the Eighth Annual Constitution Celebration commemorating the 228th Anniversary of the Signing of the United States Constitution by America’s Founders on September 17, 1787.  The Celebration took place at the Church Hollow Shelter in Montgomery Bell State Resort Park, in Burns, TN.  DOARP President Maury Miller welcomed attendees, and Pastor Lawrence Golden of Pine Hill Church of the Nazarene delivered the Invocation.  DOARP Treasurer/Military Representative Neil Ramsey led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Baritone Tim Bradley sang The Star Spangled Banner.

An important tradition has developed over the past few years at our Constitution Celebrations:  the reading of the Preamble to the United States Constitution, followed by each right of the Bill of Rights being read by ten individuals of We The People attending the Celebration.  It is quite a moving and thought-provoking part of the Celebration.

One of the framers of the Constitution, James Madison (Frank Jones), visited the Celebration.  He reported the considerations and discussions between the framers during the hot summer of 1787.  Putting personal agendas and societal titles aside, they focused on creating a document that what would ensure the liberties and rights of We The People through the generations – quite a sobering task.

In addition to our visitor from the past, Maury Miller considered the Constitution, Freedom and Liberty, and Neil Ramsey queried Have Americans Forgotten the True Meaning of Patriotism?  After hearing the thoughts of Mr. Miller and Mr. Ramsey, We The People were given opportunity to speak a few words if desired.

Tim Bradley blessed us with songs scattered throughout the Celebration that included America the Beautiful, The Statue of Liberty, and leading everyone in singing our closing song, My Country, ‘Tis Of Thee.

Exemplary Citizen Award Granted October 7, 2014

October 7, 2014, Maury and Susan Miller presented the FFCC, DOARP Exemplary Citizen awards to Darrell and Kanda Mowbray at their home.  The award is granted to recognize citizens who selflessly give of their time, talents, and resources to causes that better mankind and improve the lives of those in their community.  They serve by example, not seeking recognition – only that the cause for which they so diligently work will somehow come to fruition thru their continued efforts.

The Mowbrays were selected as Exemplary Citizen Award recipients due to their work since the year 2000, to undo a ruling that Supreme Court Justices in Tennessee made removing a waiting period requirement for women seeking an abortion in Tennessee.  The Mowbrays have worked tirelessly to re-establish a 48 hour waiting period between a woman’s initial contact with an abortion clinic and the abortion procedure and to require health inspections of abortion clinics, something not currently required in Tennessee.  A vote to amend the Tennessee Constitution with regard to the abortion waiting period and health inspections of abortion clinics will be on the ballot of the General Election in November 2014.  The Mowbrays are working toward people voting “Yes On 1” – Amendment One – in Tennessee.

The Exemplary Citizen Award was originally scheduled to be given at the Constitution Celebration on September 20, 2014, but the Mowbrays were unavailable to attend.

DOARP Treasurer/Military Representative, LCDR, USN (Ret) Neil Ramsey, spoke on the topic “In Service To My Country.”  President Maury Miller’s topic was “A Constitution for We The People,” and young adult Jes Bruinsma pondered the topic “If The Revolutionary War Were Today.”  Musicians Justin Duke and Ben Jolly performed the songs “The Dying Redcoat” and “In God We Still Trust.”  Other songs sung were the Revolutionary War National Anthem, “Chester,” and “My Country, ‘Tis Of Thee.”

The words spoken, and the music performed, gave one pause for contemplation on the America our Founding Fathers created and the America we have become today.  It is necessary to remember our beginnings so that we may better appreciate the sacrifices they willingly and selflessly made so that the free country of the United States of America could become a reality.

The Constitution Celebration is an annual event of the DOARP and other American Patriot societies.
